“You’re back early,” Takoda offered from his spot on the couch. Monica’s dog, Prince, was snuggled up next to him, sound asleep.

“What, you couldn’t have fun without me?” Monica aimed her reply at Brann with a smile as she plopped her card down on the coffee table between her and Takoda. “Gin!” she shouted with a fist pump.

“Guys’ night out turned into retrieve-depressed-jackass night out,” Brann snidely announced. Peter watched him stroll over to Monica to deliver a kiss and jealousy ate at his insides.

“I know of only one depressed jackass around here lately,” Takoda murmured as he caught sight of Peter at the door. “Oh shit! You’re covered in blood!”

Peter ambled slowly into the living room sporting nothing but boxing shorts and the generous splashes of blood covering his chest and hands. Without making any eye contact, he didn’t so much sit down on one of the couches as dare it to catch him. Once down, he allowed his body to relax and his eyes to close.

Aedan strode into the room next. “I don’t know about you lot, but I need a fecking drink.” He made a lazy gesture, soliciting drink orders, as he went to the bar by the picture windows looking out onto the rolling lawns of the estate. Takoda shook his head and waved off the idea, but Aedan shrugged, poured himself a whiskey, grabbed the bottle, and disappeared down the hall.

“Honey, you need to change your shirt. You’ve got blood on you, too. Let’s go clean you up.” Monica rose from the couch and took Brann by the hand to guide him to their rooms in the east wing. Their puppy, Prince, trailed along behind them, wagging his tail. “Thanks for the game, Takoda!” Monica shouted over her shoulder as they left.

After the room cleared, Takoda asked quietly, “You want to talk about it?”

“Do I look like I want to talk about it?”

“Sometimes it helps to beat the crap out of people, but sometimes it helps to talk. You obviously already tried option one. I think maybe it didn’t help. So, I’m offering option two.”

“You want me to talk? There’s nothing to say. She left. She’s gone. She won’t answer my texts or calls. She’s ghosting me. And I feel like... I don’t even know. I suppose I alternate between feeling gutted and feeling like I’m so angry I’m going to explode.”

“Amy’s special.”

Peter rested his face in his hands, covering his eyes. “Takoda, Amy is everything to me. She’s beautiful and brilliant.” He looked up, pain evident in his expression. “You know I can make myself invisible, right? Last week, I couldn’t resist sitting in on one of her classes. I just wanted a peek into her world. You should have seen her, Takoda. A room full of men, all trying to dismiss her. She shut down one blowhard after another because she knew more about commodities trading and futures than any of them.”

“I would have enjoyed that.” Takoda laughed.

“I’ve been walking through life for decades thinking I had everything set just right.
